Salzburger Land

Straining Field
Installation, Land Art

In Straining Field, the Vienna-based artist Alice von Alten deals with the perception of and dealing with nature. Ropes stretched taut from the crown seem to force three trees on the shores of Lake Wolfgang into a corset, which has given rise to their particular growth form. You are being directed, literally dragged to the ground, and about to tip over. But this violence is only suggested here. With her installation in the parking lot next to the Franzosenschanze, Alice von Alten questions the position and intentions of humans towards nature and other living beings in times of climate change and globalization.

DATES:

Fri, May 14th – Mon, May 24th, 2021

06:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m.
Sat, May 22nd 2021, Artistalk with Alice von Alten, Gruppe 19, music & ice-cream

ARTIST
Alice von Alten

introduces herself in an interview with Domenika Meindl:

(the whole interview will soon be available to read – here is an excerpt).

Keyword “gardens of horror”, subjugated flora and fauna in private – is this a way of exercising rule on a small scale?

Of course, the garden is always a taming of “wild” nature, historically it has been a reflection of the world since the beginning, a representation of social and political trends. The so-called “gardens of horror” are, in my opinion, an effect of the do-it-yourself culture of DIY stores and quick construction, the trend towards prefabricated houses: inexpensive, little effort in decision-making and construction, and easy to maintain.
