Bustopia
Performative and sculptural interventions in buses and at bus stops
In Bustopia by Peter Fritzenwallner and Wolfgang Obermair, bus stops and the buses of line 150 become places of performative and sculptural confrontation with commuters and travellers. The individual movement, the daily routine of the way to work, but also the waiting of people for the bus and for a better life, are the starting point for the artists to have conversations and to involve people in artistic processes.

(the whole interview will be available soon – here is an excerpt)
[…] “How would you describe your artistic collaboration?”
Wolfgang Obermair: We do something like YouTube Pranks. Artistic YouTube pranks.
Peter Fritzenwallner: Our works function like a sweaty lounge in a sports club. But without chauvinism. We want to have fun while producing. And we want fun for the audience.
Obermair: It’s about getting into something, playing into it in such a way that this enthusiasm can be transferred to others.
What is the utopian aspect of bus travel? Why “Bustopia”?
Fritzenwallner: While waiting for the bus, we are thrown back on ourselves. It is an interruption of the connections. The relationship to objects that is otherwise so focused on function and production and meaningfulness is somehow suspended, questionable. And we consider this special kind of indifference, or equivalence, to be productive.
Obermair: “In waiting, amazement becomes possible.” […]
